A Little History on Braided Rugs

Most of us are familiar with the braided rugs, that is to say, we know what it looks like. But do you know how braided rugs are made? Previously these types of floor rugs were actually homemade. Braided rugs have its roots back in the colonial times, when nothing was wasted, not even scraps of material from clothes which could no longer be worn, or beyond the point of being mended. These scraps of material were then used to make these floor coverings.

Back in those colonial times, the rugs were made by hand, and that made each rug unique and exclusive, as it was one of a kind. There were several different techniques that were used to make these rugs by hand, including cloth braiding, yarn braiding and the flat braided technique. You would be wrong to think that the rugs were made haphazardly because these braided rugs often had well thought-out color schemes and intricate designs and patterns on each of them.

How Braided Rugs Were Made

In the braiding technique, material were made into strips and then braided like the traditional braid. For the yarn style, it was more of a twisting technique, like how a roll of yarn looks. It is layered and twisted into place. For the flat braid technique, the material is braided but it is left flat. This does not have the round look, and made it easier to integrate color schemes and patterns.

In those days, there was no insulation done for many of the homes, so a wooden floor would be cold and uncomfortable to step on, more so during the cold wintry months. As such, the early settlers used these braided rugs to keep their feet much warmer and thus eliminated many illnesses at that time. Even today, many people still opt for these practical braided area rugs to help protect them against the cool wooden or linoleum floors during the winter months.

How Are They Made Now?

Nowadays the braided rugs are mostly done by machines. Modern equipment are used to make the flat braids, or by incorporating a tubular style of braiding. With the modern braided rugs, you can be assured of great looking patterns and amazing colors which make them great for covering your floors. Not only beautiful to look at, braided rugs can also add warmth and comfort to a certain room. This is one of the main reasons why these braided rugs were very popular with the people during the colonial times.

How are the braided rugs made now? Using machines, manufacturers first made a long braid of material. This piece of braided material is normally a few feet in length and takes into consideration the color and design of the finished rug. These are then shaped into rugs. With the advent of modern machines, these rugs can now be made in various shapes. Popular ones include the round braided rugs or oval braided rugs and they even have square shaped too. Compare this to those made by hand years ago. Those days the braided rugs were mostly oval because it was all done by hand and by just one person. So oval was the easiest shape to make the rugs into.

Once the shape is determined, the lines of braided material are then sewn together to make it into one piece of floor covering. Braided rugs were originally made because it was a practical necessity to combat the cold during the winter months. Today, braided rugs play two roles in our homes. The rugs are used to give warmth and comfort against the cold floors. They are also used as accents to add a decorative touch of color to our homes.
