As homeowners we are often spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing the types of rugs for our home. This is understandable as there are so many types of area rugs that are being sold today, ranging in sizes, shapes, designs and styles. Among the many out there, one type that is most often used in the home is the contemporary rug. So what is actually a contemporary rug?

Contemporary rugs
are rugs which are manufactured today in the present. They are the modern rugs that can be found in stores and online. These rugs are not only modern, but they also have a sophisticated edge about them. Truthfully any rug that is not an antique can be considered a contemporary rug. So this means that these floor rugs can be bold and striking, flashy and abstract, and innovative in design. On the other hand, they can also be more subtle and sleek, sedate and yet attractive with clean smart designs. In other words, anything goes when it comes to these rugs.

Historically these contemporary rugs can be considered as having made their appearance centuries ago. They were most often influenced by the abstract impressionism and Art Deco styles. With their modern looks and bold styles these rugs can make any home look vibrant and up-to-date today.

Look and feel of the contemporary rugs

These rugs are found in a myriad of designs and finishing. They can be in abstract designs, with geometric shapes, crazy swirls and wavy lines, splotches and splatters of colors, flowers as well as other motifs. Their colors run the gamut from soft pastels and subdued tones to bold bright colors and vibrant hues.

These rugs also provide you with a great tactile experience. You can feel the softness of the rug, thanks to the lush pile or varying heights. These make the rugs not only interesting visually but also interesting to the touch. Ultra modern rugs even have designs which seem to make the rug seem to disappear into nowhere. Some rugs don’t posses even sides, and look more like a trapezium than a rectangle. Some of these contemporary rugs have also been made to provide you with a visually interesting 3D look that appeal to many of us.

Material and weaving techniques

Contemporary rugs are found in a wide variety of materials. You can easily find them made from natural fibers like wool, cotton, skin, leather and silk. You can also opt for their synthetic counterparts and find rugs made from acrylic, nylon, and polypropylene.

These rugs can be found in all five weaving techniques: knotted, tufted, flat woven, hooked and braided. They can either be hand woven or machine woven. As with other rugs, the hand woven rugs will always cost more than machine woven ones, and rugs made from natural fibers will always cost more than synthetic materials.

Designs and styles of contemporary rugs

When it comes to the styles and designs, you know that you will literally be faced with thousands of options. These rugs can be found in all styles that you can imagine, from the braided rugs to the runner rugs, from handmade Flokati rugs to hand knotted exclusive silk rugs, from indoor rugs to outdoor rugs. You can even find them in leather and in animal prints. Many celebrity designers have also come up with their own range of contemporary rugs for the home.

Contemporary style rugs make a great addition in any home. It can provide you with comfort and warmth, and also with style, beauty and elegance.
