Is it Worth to Spend a Lot of Money on Rugs?

Getting area rugs is one way to instantly change or update the look of your home. Floor rugs can accentuate and highlight your room, or create the right mood and atmosphere that you want. Purchasing rugs is quite simple if you already know what to look out for.

Before purchasing the rug that you want, there are several considerations that you need to make. These include the size, color, style and design, as well as the type of material that you want for a rug. The price of a rug would largely depend on the size of the rug, its weaving technique and the material it is made from.

So how much can you expect to pay for a certain rug? For this purpose let’s take the most favored size by many homeowners, that is the 8 x 10 floor rugs. This will make it easier for us to compare the prices based on the different materials available.

Would You Go For Expensive Ones?

One of the most expensive types of rug that you can get in this category is the handmade Persian or Oriental rugs. These are made from silk or wool. These floor rugs are hand knotted, which means that skilled craftsmen make individual knots on the rug by hand. These high value rugs are usually collectibles.

These floor rugs use only the best silk and wool and are painstakingly made. Each rug can take several months to complete. Such a rug can easily fetch about five thousand dollars. There is no limit to how high these prices can go.

... or Something That Would Bring Out the Animal in You

The next type of floor rugs that also costs quite a hefty sum is the skin rugs, for example bear and zebra skin rugs. These are made from real skin and do not fall into the 8 x 10 category as they are in the shape of an actual animal skin. However a real zebra skin or a bearskin rug can still cost you several thousand dollars. A polar bear rug can fetch more than ten thousand dollars! For a cheaper alternative you can find rugs made from bull and cowhide, and goat and sheep skin which can cost several hundred dollars.

... or the Ever Popular Ones

For the ever popular wool  area rugs, you can have the option of choosing handmade or machine made rugs. A machine woven wool rug can be sold anywhere from several hundred dollars up to several thousand depending on the brand, style and design. A hand woven wool rug would of course cost you a lot more. These are sold anywhere from a thousand dollars and above. Depending on the design, a hand woven wool rug can cost more than ten thousand dollars. Then again you have the hand tufted rugs, which can cost a bit less than the hand woven ones. For even cheaper solutions for handmade rugs, look for flat woven rugs, the hooked rugs and braided rugs which are sold for about several hundred dollars.

... or Something Cheaper

What if you want cheap floor rugs? What type of rugs do you look for? The answer lies in synthetic rugs. These are rugs made from acrylic, nylon or polypropylene. However what you want would be the machine woven synthetic rugs, as the handmade ones can still cost you from several hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. A machine woven synthetic rug could be about several hundred dollars. Of course all these prices are again subjected to the design, style and brand of the rug, as some machine woven synthetic rugs would still cost you several thousand dollars.

The basic rule to remember is that machine woven rugs cost less than hand woven ones, and rugs made from synthetic materials cost less than those made from natural fibers. And of course, just like any rule there will always be several exceptions. Arming yourself with some knowledge about what goes into the price of a rug will help you get the best type of rug possible.
