Measuring Floor Rugs For The Home

Area rugs are an essential part of our home. We use rugs as floor coverings for several purposes. The first is for comfort. We feel more comfortable walking on a well padded surface rather than on the cold floors. The second is for beauty. Rugs can effortlessly transform an area from looking dull to looking bright and beautiful. Floor rugs can also help to create a certain atmosphere or mood for a room or an area.

So before getting any type of rug for your home, you would need to know how to get the right sized rug for the amount of available space that you have. So how do you measure for rugs? For the right sized rug to get, you first of all need to get the exact measurements of the room or the area that you have in mind, regardless of the shape of rug that you want.

For the Living Room or Family Area

Measure your living room, while taking into considerations other factors like doors and vents which could affect the placement of your rug.

If you are looking for large floor rugs that would cover up most of the living room, you can subtract about 24 inches from each side of your measurements and this will be your ideal size for a rectangular rug. In the case of a round rug, this will be the diameter of your rug.

If you want to get a smaller floor rug to create a more intimate seating area, instead of measuring the whole room, you measure only the furnished area of the room. Now subtract 24 inches from both sides of your measurements and this will be your ideal rug size.

Remember that for a room such as the living room, all your furniture pieces need to be placed entirely on or off your rug. This is of course with the exception of your sofa which can be placed with its two back legs on the floor if you want to.

For the Dining Room

Measure the length and width of the dining table. Then add about 54 inches to both measurements. This will give you a nice 27 inch on all sides for your rug to be able to accommodate the chairs even when they are all pulled back from the table. The method is the same for a round rug. It's as simple as that.

For the Hallway

Measure the length and width of the hallway. Now, subtract about 4 inches from the width of your hallway. This will give you the width of the runner rug that you should look for. For the length, subtract about 22 inches from the length of your hallway. This is the ideal length for your runner rug.

Why subtract those inches? This method will provide a nice 2 inch of space from the side of the runner to the wall and about 11 inches of space on each end of the runner rug. This will let the runner frame your hallway.

It's Important to Follow The Tips Above

Without the right measurements, you may end up with a rug that is too big that it overwhelms the area, or too small to create any impact whatsoever. Getting the right measurements for your floor rugs will make the rugs look great in whatever space that you have.
